What is a Doula ?

The term Doula (pronounced doola) is of Greek origin and translated means "woman caregiver." It is the term, which has been adopted to mean the care of women in pregnancy, childbirth and postnatal care.

We see and hear so much in the media about midwives being overstretched and often caring for a number of labouring women at the same time and thus not being able to provide exclusive one to one support. Moreover, your assigned midwife in labour may not be a midwife you have met before and so there will be limited opportunity to build a rapport.  If you decide to engage me as your Doula you will receive ample opportunity to build a rapport with me over our meetings during your pregnancy.  You would receive exclusive one to one care from me throughout your labour.  Doulas do not replace or assume the role of the midwife or other medical care providers but work alongside them to complement that care. As your Doula I would also support your partner, if you have one during your labour to empower your partner to assist you with confidence.
